Urban sketching is the new craze that’s sweeping the art world!

Until now watercolour has been associated with beautiful tranquil scenes of nature and landscape. And i do plenty of that too – and it’s wonderful – but there’s nothing like whipping out your watercolours and pens and capturing the gritty life that’s a normal part of our existence.

If you would love to start watercolour sketching in the built environment, but aren’t sure where to start, this is for you.

Over five days from 12th-16th June, I will teach five 90-minute classes on the basics of this beautiful medium that can be practiced anywhere.

  • The best portable materials to use and how to use them
  • How to sketch with subtlety in public
  • Mixing colours
  • How much water to use
  • Fixing mistakes
  • Keeping everything clean and bright
  • Making things look realistic
  • Making a boring scene fun to sketch
  • Keeping things cool and contemporary
  • Portraying hot bright colours in the one scene – tastefully!

When you purchase this course, you will be sent a link each day for the following day’s class. Each class lasts 90 minutes. If you cannot attend the live class, you can catch up at your leisure as they will be recorded, and available for three months after the week is over.

The emphasis is on urban sketching and keeping things fresh and lively. Nothing “traditonal” about this course! From cars to signposts and buildings to cafés, I will lead you through the typical things an urban sketcher captures.

The paint sets I had in stock are all sold out for the moment, but here are the colours I will be using in class:

  1. Payne’s Grey (any dark navy or dark blue-grey or grey)
  2.  Phthalo Blue (any blue colour that looks bright enough to be the sky)
  3. Ultramarine Intense (any rich deep blue but not navy)
  4. Cherry Quiacridone Red (this is for mixing with browns to make a skin colour so a soft pink is good)
  5. Aquarius Orange (any orange will do)
  6. Aquarius Yellow (any bright clean yellow or lemon yellow is good)
  7. Phthalo Green (any dark blue-green or turquoise green is great)
  8. Sap Green (any bright yellow-green)
  9. Aquarius Green (any sludgy olive green)
  10. Yellow Ochre (golden sandy brown)
  11. Burnt Sienna Monte Amiata (any reddish brown is good)
  12. Cyprus Burnt Umber (any very dark brown is good)
  13. As an option, it’s good to have a bright pink (Magenta, Opera, Pyrroll Rubine is good)

See you soon!
