I am exceedingly excited to tell you that my new book is available for pre-order from Amazon. It’s one of the next books in the Urban Sketchers Handbook series, and it’s called Drawing Expressive People.
I have always loved drawing people, ever since I was tiny and was a slave to Asterix and Obelix and Tintin. All I ever wanted was to capture that je ne sais quoi, the beauty that it is to capture a human being in art. Over the years my figures have become progressively less wonky and more recognisable. There’s only one reason for that: I am getting better and more disciplined at drawing what’s really there, rather than what I think is there, or what I think should be there.
If you can forget about how you think a face should go, or how a body should be, and remain faithful and true to what is actually there, then you are more than half way to success – you are seventy per cent there. All you have to add on top of that are your own quirks and whims, and you will create beautiful art.
It helps to know how to get the most out of you paints, so I have spoken a little about that. It helps to know a little about some really handy colours and bits of kit, so I’ve said a little about that. It really helps to know that if you grab your opportunity whenever it presents itself, and have a mini-kit with you at all times, then you will have many, many chances to practice and increase your output…and as long as you are really trying to push yourself, your practice will help you reap great rewards.
I can’t wait to show you what I have written and drawn to help you on your journey, and between now and then I will highlight and expand upon several topics you’ll find in the book. I hope I inspire you as much as inform…
Stay tuned!
How great to read this.😁 Sooner than expected? It is definitely on my wishlist. I admire the way you sketch people, like to learn that too.
