I painted this of The Long Walk from the Claddagh, on the west bank of the River Corrib. The row of cottages is charming at all times of the year, but the colours are saturated on an overcast day in summer. It’s a very classic Galway view, perhaps the more so as it is clearly visible from the very busy western end of the city. There are always lots of birds in the foreground of this scene.
I put the lampposts in because they were there, but I made the editorial decision to leave out a very bent and twisted crowd-control barrier that was tied to the nearest lamppost. I normally never change a scene but I broke that rule here.
