There is a statue of the Hindu deity Lord Shiva in the car park of a holy lake in Mauritius. It is about 150ft high, in solid concrete. It is like a Hindu version of a cathedral – it certainly makes an impression. You can see a tiny Frenchman at the foot of the statue. His wife volunteered him when I asked if one of them would mind being drawn for scale. They were a very obliging couple: they had seen me sketching in the Botanic Gardens the day before, and they wondered if I was following them.
While I painted, a pair of newlyweds drifted around, completely entwined, utterly besotted. They were covered in henna patterns (that’s how I knew they were newlyweds). They barely noticed my presence, unsurprisingly, but I was impressed that they noticed me at all.
